Ingrid's Insights

Ingrid I wasn't feeling very insightful as I thought about what I was going to write for this month. I found myself thinking, what special things, besides Groundhog Day, Valentine's Day, and President's Day, happen in February? My internet search revealed to me that February is special for many reasons. My insights for you this month will be more "did you know?" I learned a lot and maybe you will too.

Did you know that there are several month long observances in February including American Heart month, American History month, Black History month and International Friendship month?

Special foods that are celebrated this month include cherries, grapefruit, snack food, carrots, nutella, and gumdrops. An interesting combination, don't you think?

Do you find it ironic that the day that Hershey's chocolate was founded is also toothache day? Or that Abraham Lincoln's birthday is also national lost penny day?

Important patents in February include the bottle cap, the toothpick, and the electric printing press.

And finally, several important people in history celebrated birthdays in February including Charles Lindbergh, Rosa Parks, Hank Aaron, Babe Ruth, Charles Dickens, Laura Ingalls Wilder, Susan B. Anthony, and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.

My "special days in February" search turned in to an adventure for me. I learned many things, was reminded of things that I had forgotten, and found a new sense of appreciation for the month of February.

The West Madison Senior Coalition is a similar adventure, where we are working as a team to learn new things, help each other remember things and appreciate even the little things. I hope you will join us for a bit of adventure this month. There are many programs and activities and you are more than welcome to join us!

As always, thank you for your continued support!
