Inclement Weather Policy

If the Madison Metropolitan School District closes schools due to weather conditions, all West Madison Senior Coalition offices, dining sites, West Madison Senior Center programs, and activities will be cancelled and closed. School closings are announced on the major television networks and radio stations. We will reopen when the Madison Schools reopen. We apologize for any inconvenience.

In the event of inclement weather, for Saturday dinners, or when school is not in session, please call the Senior Center at 238-0196 after 10:00 AM on the day of the dinner. A message on the answering machine will announce any closings. For more information please call 238-7368, Monday-Friday, from 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM.

FoodShare Wisconsin Information

Many seniors are struggling to make ends meet these days, but you shouldn't have to choose between buying food and paying for medicine, electricity, and other bills. FoodShare can give you monthly deposits to buy food, freeing up your money for other necessities. If you qualify, you may be able to receive between $16 and $200 per month in benefits, with the average benefit for a single senior household being $108 per month.

Family Size    Monthly Gross Income
1                    $1,806
2                    $2,430

If your household's income falls within these guidelines, call the FoodShare Helpline at 1-877-366-3635 to learn if you might be eligible! It's easier than ever to apply and you can get free, confidential assistance from a FoodShare outreach specialist right in your area. See our Newsletter for more details.

Overture Center Vouchers Available

The West Madison Senior Coalition is part of an outreach program with the Overture Center. As part of this program, we receive vouchers for music, dance, and plays from the Overture Center throughout the year. With these vouchers, participants may buy a ticket for the performance from $2 - $3.50.

Previous offerings have included vouchers for the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra, Kanopy Dance, North American Indian Dance, Forward Theatre, and the Peking Acrobats.

If you are interested in adding your name to our "call" list, please call Mary Malischke at 238-7368, ex 2 and leave your name and phone number. We will do our best to make sure that everyone gets the opportunity to receive a voucher this 2011-2012 year.

Home Chore Volunteers Needed

Home Chore Volunteers help seniors stay in their homes by assisting them with tasks that are difficult to manage. Chores vary, but may include general cleaning or organizing. Volunteers are paired with a senior based on need, interest, and availability. In helping a senior stay in their home, you may develop a lasting friendship. Go to our Volunteer page for specific tasks listing or call Diane at 238-7368.
